Mole: More than human design

DESCRIPTION

This research explores methods for more than human design, aiming to transform the relationship between non-human entities, specifically moles, and humans. We seek to transform this relationship, characterized by conflict, into a relationship of care. Moles live most of their life underground and it is the molehills, disrupting the surface of fields, that reveal their presence. Combining a chosen site with molehills on the campus of Eindhoven University of Technology and a common campus waste stream; coffee grounds, we used material-driven design, auto-ethnography and speculative fabulation to explore the relationship between moles, humans and the ecosystem they live in. Multiple iterations of material exploration and responding to unexpected events, resulted in the Workshop “Moled”. With this workshop, we propose an alternative way of relating to the mole, centred around collaboration and co-creation. This research project contributes an explorative example of how designers can design with more than humans.
